This home. First photographed for my book A Beautiful Mess and thereafter, featured in The Telegraph Magazine, UK - it is the country living dream of antiques dealer Steiner Berg-Olsen. Describing his home as 'French with a dash of Scandi', for the French side, check out the fairytale castle exterior, the neo-classical details and the supersized fireplaces indoors. As for the Scandi, take a tour upstairs to the attic, where the vast 128-square metre space is painted head-to-toe in white and kitted out with Carlo Colombo and Alvar Aalto design. Living between the old and new, Steiner has transformed this derelict chateau in the Loire into an elegant, modern home.

Featured

The house, which dates from 1910, is classified as a maison bourgeoise. It was its size and imposing exterior that attracted Steiner to the house.

On a side table in the drawing room sit black glass vases designed by Steiner himself.

In the well preserved foyer, the floor tiles are original to the house, the vintage paw-foot table is English and the pictures on the walls are a mix of works Steiner has accumulated over the years.

Painted in a moody blue, the kitchen shows how warm and inviting dark shades can be. The sideboard is from Emmaus, a chain of charity shops that are treasure troves of second-hand furniture in France.

This first floor living room is painted in Dulux Tarragon Glory 1. The large floor lamp is by Marcel Wanders.

In the attic, Steiner has created a bright-white Scandi lounge. The sofa system is by Pierro Lissoni for Cassina. Beside it is a Hans Wegner chair upholstered in Herdwick tweed.
